Are you mindful of the things you do? Do you have self-awareness to actually see what’s really going on? Let’s say you're walking down the street and you bumped into someone. Sure, you say it was an accident because I’m sure you’re not walking the street thinking you're going to purposely bump into someone, but you have to be mindful of your surroundings because that one accidental bump could one day turn into something more than you want. This is the same for the workplace and how we show up with our emotions, show up for the people we have on our team and show up for our clients.
We all know the workplace can be a little stressful but why is that? Really think about that. Do you think it’s possible to show up without “bumping” into someone? You have to be mindful of everything, look at your surroundings and think about how you can make things better. And do this without judgement. This not only goes for you but your team, too? Now, how do you build a mindful team?
What is Mindfulness in the Workplace?
Mindfulness in the workplace is not only using the practical skills to lead in the workplace but having self-awareness as a leader. (Again, this will start with you and fall down to your team) Remember your actions speak louder than your words. You must be present in the moment to help with all areas in the workplace.
Let’s say you’re in a team meeting and you are in a bad mood? You have an attitude and you're not showing empathy or compassion to your team? What does this say of you? Or if you are in office and you walk in slamming doors with a chip on your shoulder, what’s that say about you? Sure, everyone is going to have their bad days, but you need to look all around you and in yourself by checking yourself and figure out a way to not do this.
By bringing this approach into the workplace, in your leadership, to your team, you will create a workplace environment that encourages open communication, respect and collaboration.
What Does It Mean to be a Mindful Leader?
When you bring all these elements together, you’ll be able to enhance effectiveness and help build a better workplace culture and the way I see it, is you will humanize the workplace.

Active Listening: Truly listening to your team when they’re talking to you without judgement
